According to DNAinfo New York, New York Downtown Hospital has laid off its entire paramedic and EMT staff in preparation for a takeover by New York Presbyterian. Workers were told by the hospital that the move was a part of their merger with New York Presbyterian, which does not have unionized paramedics and EMT’s.
New York Presbyterian reportedly told workers they can reapply for their jobs if they give up their union affiliation with 1199 SEIU. According to the DNAinfo report, many workers have been left confused and angry over the lack of communication with their hospital and union in regards to the layoffs. Workers complained that they were given no warning that their jobs were in jeopardy.
