NASA's science rover Curiosity landed on Mars shortly after 1:30 p.m. ET this morning (August 6th), set to begin a two-year mission to look for evidence that the planet once had the necessary elements for life. Mission controllers burst into applause and cheered as they received signals confirming that the rover had survived its tricky descent and touched down within its landing zone near the foot of a tall mountain, in what NASA described it as perhaps the most complex feat achieved in robotic spaceflight. Just moments later, Curiosity beamed back its first three images from the Martian surface. The car-sized, nuclear-powered rover, described as the first full-fledged mobile science lab sent to another planet, took more than eight months to get to Mars after being launched last November.

New York City's Restaurant Week is under way, with more than 320 restaurants offering prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus.

NYC & Company is marknig the 20th Annniversary of the tradition, and participating restaurants are offering the 3-course meals at $24.07 for lunch and $35 for dinner.

The city's marketing, tourism and partnership organization says Restaurant Week began in 1992 with 95 restaurants across the city taking part.

Restaurant Week Summer 2012 runs from July 16th through August 10. Saturdays are excluded.

If you look up at the night sky on Saturday (May 5th) you will see the "supermoon," which is the biggest full moon of the year. A supermoon takes place when moon hits its full phase at the same time it makes its closest approach to Earth for the month. On Saturday night, the moon will be within 221,802 miles of the Earth, which will be its closest approach of the entire year. With the month's full moon timed with the closest approach to Earth, the moon could appear 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of 2012. The last supermoon was in March 2011, which was the biggest and brightest full moon in 18 years.
