Inmates at Rikers Island were caught on video fighting for more than hour before being broken up by prison officers. ABC obtained the video showing inmates using everything from mop sticks to a knife in the large brawl.
The fight took place back on August 5 and in the footage, police in riot gear are shown arriving after inmates are already in the middle of a huge fight. According to the ABC report, this is just one example of a growing number of violent incidents at Rikers Island.
After watching the video people are asking: Why didn't officers break up this fight sooner?
The Department of Corrections released a statement via Gothamist responding to the video:
"While the housing unit was fully staffed - and a considerable number of staff and supervisors on post in the jail and on Rikers Island responded - there is every indication that this situation could have been handled differently and that this incident went on far too long. An investigation was initiated immediately and will be completed as quickly as possible. Every issue will be thoroughly addressed to prevent a reoccurrence."
