NYC To Adopt Avonte's Law

NYC To Adopt Avonte's Law
Posted June 12th, 2014 @ 11:33am

The City Council Committee on Education is expected to pass a new law where school employees keep a better watch on students called Avonte's Law.

This law came about due to the death of a 14-year-old autistic boy, Avonte Oquendo, who left a school unsupervised and ended up being found dead on the shores of the East River last year.

The new legislation proposal aims to put alarms on all doors of school, so teachers and staff are notified when a child is leaving the premises when they are not supposed to be.

Oquendo's family believes that he would still be alive today if there were laws in place to keep students protected and safe at school.
