Mayoral Sleepover: Democratic Candidates Spend Night in Public Housing
Posted Monday, July 22nd 2013 @ 7am

Five Democratic candidates for NYC mayor spent Saturday night in an East Harlem housing project, according to MY FOX NY. Democratic mayoral candidates Anthony Weiner, Christine Quinn, Bill de Blasio, Bill Thompson, and John Liu slept on sofas, air mattresses, and sleeping bags at the Lincoln Center Houses on East 135th Street.

The five mayoral candidates accepted a challenge from Al Sharpton to spend a night in a public housing complex to witness the conditions first hand. Sharpton also stayed the night according to the New York Post.

The NY Post reports that nearly 30 police officers were also at the housing complex, much more than the usual five or six police officers residents are used to. The candidates were critical of the New York City Housing Authority after spending the night. The candidates witnessed the poor conditions of the city-run East Harlem housing project first-hand which included mold and no air conditioning for many of the over 3,000 residents.

Republican mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis did not attend the sleepover and did not seem impressed with the Democratic candidates. "I grew up on 135 St. in conditions like the #NYCHA Houses, unlike the other candidates who are out of touch and have no idea what it's like," Catsimatidis tweeted.
