Cuomo Wants to Give Inmates a College Education
Posted February 17th, 2014 @ 6:08am

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced a state plan that would allow prison inmates to take college classes.  The goal is to reduce New York's 40 percent recidivism rate.

"Let's invest and rehabilitate people so that they have a future," Cuomo said.

It costs the state $60,000 a year for each inmate, more than the cost of a Harvard education.  Cuomo believes inmates who earn a college degree behind bars will be less likely to return to a life of crime.  That would also reduce the state's overall prison cost.

"Someone who leaves prison with a college degree has a real shot at a second lease on life because their education gives them the opportunity to get a job and avoid falling back into a cycle of crime," he said.

College courses will be offered at 10 prisons around the state.  There's no word on the cost.
