Bill de Blasio Skips First Major NYC Mayoral Debate
Posted October 10th, 2013 @ 9:25am

Republican mayoral candidate Joe Lhota was confident that he could cut into Bill de Blasio's huge lead in the polls once voters saw the candidates debate. Well, what if they don't debate? Democratic candidate Bill de Blasio, who has held as much as a 50 point lead in recent polls skipped Wednesday night's NYC mayoral debate, held on NY1.

Instead, Lhota debated Independence party candidate Adolfo Carrión in what was described by NY1 as a "largely cordial debate." The two mayoral candidates fielded questions and debated stop-and-frisk, transportation policies, and other issues.

There are still three televised mayoral debates planned, but de Blasio's absence is believed by some to be the candidate playing it safe. According to Huffington Post, de Blasio did not have anything on his schedule that would have conflicted with Wednesday night's debate time.
