Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman as host of The Late Show. CBS announced the decision Wednesday afternoon in a press release, less than a week after Letterman's announcement that he will retire next year. Colbert will retire his Colbert Report character when he takes over. The show's location, producers and other elements will be decided and announced at a later date. CBS signed a five-year agreement with Colbert, who's Comedy Central contract is up at the end of this year.
So Colbert is replacing Letterman, and CBS Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson is staying where he is. Ferguson's people reportedly put a clause in his contract stipulating that if a non-Ferguson character takes over the Late Show, Ferguson would get a consolation payout from CBS. New York Post is reporting the payout as $5 million, while the Daily News puts it closer to $8 million or even $12 million. Ferguson's contract expires in June and it isn't all that unusual. In the past, NBC has reportedly paid both Conan O'Brien and Letterman not to take over the Tonight Show.
